Unconditional.

Random read over on Dirt: Vegetation: The valve at the end of the world, by Evan Grillon.

This story held a little resonance since I’d read a bit about how seemingly minor bloodstream infections, say introduced by a nick in your gums, or in my case about 10 years ago an infection under a tooth, could easily and rapidly escalate to life-threatening damage to your heart.

When the story was mentioned on Hacker News the other day one line a commenter AlphaWeaver quoted stood out:

What a stranger can offer a person in a moment of crisis is solicitude unalloyed by the past or the future of the relationship, unconditional in the true sense of the word.

If you’ve been on the receiving end of that scenario you know what a precious, astonishing gesture it can be.

Hybrid – Break My Soul.

From Disappear Here, Hybrid’s fourth album, but the first one of theirs that I’d heard. Shortly thereafter began some dark and challenging times, so this album was on constant repeat for months whenever I had the chance to listen.

Everything but the Girl – Run a Red Light.

After some 20 odd years, Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt return in Jan 2023 with Fuse, a powerhouse album that is distinctly EbtG, only more evolved and more eloquent, if that were possible.

At this time things for us were in flux; in a comfort zone but becoming stagnant, needing to move to be near family yet with the pieces still stubbornly not settling in place. This track locked my attention as it felt like some resonance of ennui, but also a frightening leap to try to make things better.

Run a Red Light has a trance-like quality like 10cc’s magnificent I’m Not in Love. To this day it can knock me sideways.

Hessian – White Lie feat. Emma Mae.

Hessian – White Lie feat. Emma Mae.

Released in June 2022, this track is elegant in its apparent simplicity, immaculately layered and produced.

This one was an Apple Music ‘you might also like’ pick that was bang on. On the first listen it was so striking that it demanded a re-listen, again, and again, as each layer made its presence known like a subtle spring breeze. From the quiet ‘let’s begin’ kettle drum, the whitespace where each part of the track isn’t cramped, the compelling baseline that subtly swells where it’s needed, to the synth pads that have crept in to the space before you notice them, and yet all of these components would be missed if they weren’t there. Emma Mae’s evocative performance is the perfect completion to the track.

And again.

A fair amount’s happened since the last post. A new state, new job, new home. A lot of change, loss; but a new beginning, and back in my old home town.

Let’s get started. Again.

Hi. I’m not new here, but I’m new here. As in this iteration of… whatever this will be. A bit of a journal, a place to store notes, share music picks. Let’s go with that for now.
